It's a POA-1003, a notch lower in rank to POA-1001, 80wpc RMS and not for sale. The guys at JLLP said it has slight defect and could be redeemed by its owner any day now.

i was looking around last Sunday for a unit that Sir Obet might be interested in when i saw an Arcam Alpha 6 quoted by a friendly trader at P3.5K. i said hold the sale until monday morning (only after i have checked it on the Net and in my hifi magazine collection. ) found out it was a high-current unit, 50wpc @ 8 ohms, 100wpc at 4 ohms that came out in mid -90s. originally sold at 300 British pounds and a website said it retailed for 2,450 Malaysian ringgits in late '90s. for P3.5K it's a bargain, so i got it. it received VG rating from Hifi Choice during its prime. Arcam is more known as budget hifi in UK with its market mostly from people in the academe: teachers and students. it was acclaimed, however, for its amps' simple circuitry and value-for-money performance. i had extensive experience with UK-made hifi: 3 models of MF, two models of Quad, a Cyrus II, a valve Radford, etc. my last UK hifi purchase was in Hong Kong in 1999: US$1,100 for the MF-120. after that, it was vintage Jap hifi all the way. if only UK hifi is priced here as low or even double quotes of Jap hifi, I'd probably concentrate my collection on those gear. fortunately, Sir Obet is interested in another power amp, not this one, which i might pick up anytime today. so, the Arcam Alpha 6 is mine . (a good sample of mid-level UK gear, not interested in selling it even at P5K, by the way!) anyway here are the photos:

Wala akong magawa/mabili today. Just posting this for those who might be interested on how an Onkyo Integra P-306 preamp looks/sounds like. I got this amp at P1.7K here in Davao, as is, and should have been paired with a good-looking Onkyo Integra M-506R that would go to Narayan. Unfortunately, the power amp was defective and is still not working properly until now (the relay kicks on after a few minutes, then goes off, and the power amp would work okay again.) Since Narayan couldn't get the M-506R, he was so kind to allow me to own the P-306. However, if the M-506R is repaired perfectly, I might buy it and offer the pair, with the P-306, at the original original acquisition cost to Narayan again. Sayang, the M-506R is almost mint 9 of 10 in physical condition with a thick glass front panel. The P-306 rates 6, or 7, of 10 in cosmetic looks and performed well after spraying liquid cleaner into its innards. The sound is very good and the phono section is perfect. The output is a bit more robust compared with my other preamps and that makes it a good pair for my "thin-sounding" Yamaha B-3 power amp (a sought-after VFET worldwide whose sound characteristics simulate valve amps.) I just found today another P-306, a bit better looking than my unit, from a neighboring trader but at P3K. An M-506R or a P-306 is currently sold at a range of $150 to $400 each in the Japanese used market. A pair would cost up to $700. Here's a K-nisi link to the M-506R, still under repair: page.freett.com/knisi/m-506.html (below the photo and specs of the M-506) Here are photos of the P-306, which suddenly became mine:

I've baby sitted that amp for 8 months - and honestly that can give new production amps a run for their money. 'though am a tube guy I find british amps (and speakers) sweet sounding to my ears. Unfortunately, the owner had requested it back and never took the option of selling it to me Haay...

I actually checked the British Audio-Visual Dealers' Association Marketplace website before I bought it and found it was still quoted at 100 British pounds in London's used market last month. I have a copy of HiFi Choice (April 1994) that reviewed it against amps priced from 300 to 600 British pounds. It came out ahead of the competition, which includes among others Audiolab 8000A; Harman Kardon HK 1400; Lin Majik; Marantz PM-80II; and Rotel RA-980BX.
The previous owner was Japanese, by the way. Not really one of my favorites. Still, at a price lower than many Jap amplifiers, the Alpha 6 was definitely a steal.

salamat nang marami. been into this hobby for almost 30 years, burned so many times by so-called high-end and expensive gear, pero nagsisi after hearing some of these junks from Japan. ewan, baka may problema na lang talaga itong tenga ko, tumatanda na kasi pero meron din namang nahahawa na sa amin ni Diego (another vintage hifi fanatic) - kasama na dyan si Lordfoo at si Southpeak, he! he! he! 'Yang si Foo daming magagandang hifi antiks na binili lately pero hindi pa na-post ;D ;D

'Yang si Foo daming magagandang hifi antiks na binili lately pero hindi pa na-post ;D ;D Di naman madami Sir Sandawa... I did get the following over a few month period: 1. An AR38BXi speaker. 2. Sansui Tu207 tuner 3. a Sony tuner SA50ES 4. An unknown speaker. Bose 301 maybe? 5. A SONY CDP 303ES 6. BEOMASTER 4000 7. Beovox 4802 8. a Heathkit AA1515 9. Also a Sansui Receiver 5000. No pictures yet. I used to have a Sansui 1000a and a Sansui 5000x that I bequethed to my two brothers. Also a non-working Sansui 8080db. My brods liked the 5000x over the 1000a. 10. Also two pairs of Lovan speaker stands. 11. A pioneer 512 turntable.

Marantz CD 34 (made by a Philips plant in Belgium) is a collector's item - sold as Mission 7000 in Europe in late '90s at an equivalent of $1,000. just checked Hifido, Japan's largest trader of upscale used hifi, CD-34 still selling at $400, higher even than Sony's top of the line ES models. (my top CDP, a Revox B226 still sells at close to $900 in Hifido, but my Sony CDP-X555ES is priced only $300.) for those interested in checking prices of their gear in the Japanese market, check this website, click the "Items in the Past" box and search using your unit's brand and model number: www.hifido.co.jp/indexe.htmltake note imported (non-Japan units) are unrealistically priced, higher by twice or three times of the US used market quotes. this is because of the high import tax slapped by Japanese customs on imported products.

Grabeh! Just discovered and joined this site lately.Particularly enjoy this thread about vintage stuff as I myself is into this hobby, medyo "controlled" pa nga lang, unlike Mr Sandawas'. Ang gaganda ng mga nakukuha nyong vintage gears,Sir!. Magkapitbahay lan pala tayo dito sa Sikatuna Village if u used to stay in Diliman Area... Parang gusto ko ulit mamasyal sa pier...i used to frequent that place too...Got myself the following gears and still with me: SX3II,SX5II,Diatone DS-503,AU9500 Sansui, Silver Faced Beauties amps from Pioneer like 8800II,7600II,6800, others I cant recall the models. Also have the marantz 4400 and 4300.Also have a numberof turntables to play with...magbobote rin po ako, gaya nyo sirs! ;D ;D ;D. I am still re-reading this thread sa dami ng stuff to remember and ogle at and possibly watch out for in pier... Keep on posting sirs... Sir Sandawa, tnx nga pala...
