I'm opening this thread for those who travel to the regions on official business who might want to check out hifi sources for parts, or gears, that are out-of-stock in Metro Manila.
Hoping others based in the regions would contribute to this thread too for the benefit of forum members who travel down South. I could contribute only hifi outlets for three Mindanao cities in the meantime: Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga.
Updated:
1. DAVAO
importers' warehouses where amps are sold 'as-is' at roughly P15/watt and CDPs from P600 to P1K per unit.
a.) JLLP-Bavco (Km 7 Buhangin, Diversion Rd, going to the Davao International Airport) - shipment arrives every week, mostly TVs, amps, CDPs, speakers and personal computers.
b.) Arjoel (Carpenter St. below the Agdao flyover) - container van arrives twice a week, mostly TVs, personal computers, amps, CDPs, tape decks, speakers, other home electronics.
c.) Wrenjoren (F. Bangoy St.) - mostly TVs and personal computers with a few professional audio components.
retail shops (surplus)
a.) TSP shop (Carpenter St.) - good selection, mostly mid- to high-end Japanese audio, reasonable pricing @ P20 per watt. CDPs @ P1.5K
b.) Remde Enterprises (Jacinto St., near gate of Ateneo de Davao, one block away from Marco Polo) - good selection but generally priced high @ roughly P25 to P30 per watt. CDPs from P1.5K to P2.5K
c.) JOP/Joel Yap (Sta. Ana Ave. near cor. Inigo St., infront of PRC regional office; also Sta. Ana Ext. near thew Pier) you can find treasures on this one. pricing is realistic and owner stocks the best he could find from the importers bodegas.
c.) outlets of the three warehouses (San Pedro St. F. Bangoy St.) - inconsistent pricing, hardly understand hifi.
retail shops (brand new)
a.) Metro Sound (Monteverde St.) - stocks all brands available at Ambassador Greenhills.
b.) Sound Chaser (T. Claudio St.) - branch of Sound Chaser at Philam Q.C., stocks JBL, Polk Audio, analog accessories, etc.
c.) Proline (ATU complex, Ilustre St.) - dealer for brands sold by Audiophile but was able import directly Monster products not available in Metro Manila.
d.) R.J. Homes (Legaspi St.) - old stocks of US and British audio, Cerwin Vega, Bose, KEF, JBL, Arcam, Altec Lansing, etc.
e.) Yupangco/Perfect Pitch outlets - for Yamaha, Tannoy and some other brands.
2. CAGAYAN DE ORO
a.) American Surplus (Xavier U gym) - a lot of vintage audio, especially speakers - ADS, Adcom, DCM, Tannoy, JBL, Infinity, KLH, ESS, Bose, Polk Audio, Yamaha, many others. Price for used speakers (but in good condition) ranges from P4K for bookshelfs to P8K for floorstanders.
b.) Superlux (Capistrano St.) - this small shop is a revelation since it stocks various types of old British-made (Trigon brand) tubes at prices as low as P280 each for 12ax7 to P500 for the big ones installed in power amps. it also has a lot of spare stylus, including Shure M-series made by Japan's Nagaoka sealed (not the Taiwan-made available in Raon.) got myself a couple of M44-7s and M75-Es made by Nagaoka (licensed by Shure, I believe since Nagaoka is major analog accessory supplier in the US) at P300 each. there are about a dozen Shure/Nagaoka-made replacement styluses still available.
c.) Gaisano Mall (2nd floor - Hardware shop - Lapasan national highway) - a lot of audio accessories including full line of Quantum (Deutsche Audio) products.
3. ZAMBOANGA
Few good audio sources but there are at least two shops that have old stocks of replacement stylus. i asked for prices and was quoted figures half of Raon's, very cheap.
a.) New City Radio Supply (I think it's Orendain St. but what I'm sure is it's located on the street where the electronic shops are located) - the Chinese woman owner told me he has a box full of replacement stylus for Shure, AT and Japanese brand cartridges. Unfortunately, she's too lazy and would not find those stocks unless samples of the stylus is shown.
b.) two blocks to the left, of New City Radio Supply, there's another shop that sells styli and a few used cartridges, including Quadraphonic, at discounted prices. No Shure in this shop though, mostly AT and Japanese cartridge replacements.
Hoping others based in the regions would contribute to this thread too for the benefit of forum members who travel down South. I could contribute only hifi outlets for three Mindanao cities in the meantime: Davao, Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga.
