i have not been posting lately on the turntable threads simply because i have repeatedly admitted that TT is now a low priority in my hifi system. i'm a bit embarassed since many of you are truly vinyl fanatics and while i've been into this medium since early '80s, i indulge on it now only for nostalgia, some rare sound (such as pop and click) that i wanted to hear, and to remove foreign matters deposited on my Japanese virgins, part of my comparatively large vinyl collection. but i'm too excited today to share another blissful experience. i saw and bought a Technics SL7 - www.vintagetechnics.com/turntables/sl7.htm - a month ago from a warehouse here in Davao and found it defective when i went home. it has a free service manual at Vinyl Engine (http://vinylengine.com/phpBB2/index.php) but even following tips from that manual failed to revive this unit. then last week, i bought a linear tracking Akai TT at P1K from a local shop just to have a new toy. that unit reminded me of my old Technics SL10 which was one the best in the '80s. it also got me sad for reminding me i failed to fix the SL7. i had a slack in my schedule this morning after repairing my Hitachi speakers yesterday. i opened again the innards of the SL7 until i saw a rubber belt that's working (from tests) but seemed loose when i pulled it. i decided to go to a nearby store and bought a smaller size belt. assembled the whole thing back and suddenly, the linear tracking mechanism moved. i have yet to install the SL7, relatively heavy at about 10 kgs, but i'm sure it's now working. it used to sell at $400 in early '80s (vs. $175 for SLD3, $270 for the original SL1200, and $350 for the SLM1 and $600 for the SL10). this is my fourth Technics in my TT collection. i still believe the SLM1 (http://www.vintagetechnics.com/turntables/slm1.htm) is the best in that collection. the others are an old SL1200 and an SLD3. i also have the original Thorens 320, Dual 1219 and 621 (one of the most popular brands at Vinyl Engine based on gallery photos) and a Micro Seki-clone made by Chou Denki Corp of Japan. the small linear tracking Akai is my 9th TT (kailangan ang maraming TTs for those Japanese virgins- vinyls, that is). with updated stylus backups, i'm increasing my vinyl listening time from 10 hours weekly to at least 20 hours weekly. linear tracking TTs are so convenient, as easy as playing CDPs. stylus wear and mistracking are also insignificant compared with traditional TTs.

...linear tracking TTs are so convenient, as easy as playing CDPs. stylus wear and mistracking are also insignificant compared with traditional TTs. Sandawa, I agree. I myself have a Technics SL-6 (programmable)with Shure M104 cart. Just like a programable CDP. I still have the Technics SL-10, the platter is moving but the tonearm does not. And Technics SL-DL1 or DL3 yata that also needs servicing. Haven't brought them to panasonic service center yet. losi_phile

sayang yang SL-10, sir. got that model in early '80s but mine was bought at P3K (or P5K?) by the doctor husband of my wife's Ob-gyn at St. Luke's.
madali lang yan i-repair. open the top cover (mga 6 to 8 screws), find the small rubber belt attached to the motor pulley. dito sa Davao P6 lang yung belt para diyan, SL-10's parts are almost same as those of my SL-7 i think.
just be careful in tightening the screws, medyo brittle na yung plastic cover niyan. i think your unit has a users' and service manuals downloadable free from Vinyl Engine's website.

Thanks Sandawa,
I already opened the SL-10 before I got the SL-6 and thanks for the advice. I haven't really checked the belt sa motor pulley and maybe pareho sila ng SL-6 ng problem that I was able to fixed.
I already got the service manuals for the SL-10.
Thanks again.

after frustrations with imageshack two years ago, i finally stored a lot of audio pics in photobucket last week. i often mentioned i prefer SL-M1 (my 'whirling dervish') over SL-1200. both were made in early '80s and while the SL-1200 was made to do commercial work, the SL-M1 was made for the audio enthusiast's home. with only basic features compared with those on 1200, the M1, however, appeared to have a bigger and robust gimbal suspension assembly. the SL-M1 (with the 1200 at the back) front of SL1200 top of M1 top of 1200 harapan btw, the long plastic arm installed on M1 is a Rek-O-Matic (?) record cleaner, an old reliable (from way back in early '80s, a gift from a friend). while playing, the two brushes clean the groove before it reaches the cartridge stylus.

yung nasa picture na SL1200mkII kay diego 'yan. mine is an orig SL1200, iba itsura - no slider pitch control, no adjustable gimbal suspension assembly, no pop-up lamp for stylus. besides, basag na ang right side kaya nakakahiya nang ipakita.
mahal yang SLM1, baka akala 'nyo. bought that two years ago from Nick's junk shop here in Davao. "bawal testing, as-is, no return-no exchange." kinuha ko agad ng makita kong piano-finish even before i checked it on the Internet. hindi naman nagkamali!
Price: P600.
