i like the part where the reviewer justifies a direct drive design as compared to a belt-driven system when he says -
"xxx turntables are like cars: some people love rear wheel drive, others prefer front wheel. I wouldn’t choose a car based solely on which end the tranny is connected to. Likewise, I wouldn’t discount a turntable based on how it gets the platter spinning."

If it's good enough for Porsche & the McLaren F1 Racing Team, then it's good enough for my Technics! Engineers say an automobile engine using Mobil 1 can last 20,000 kilometers before the next oil change. Can someone tell me how many rpms of the platter are the equivalent of the 20,000 Kilometers? Then you'll be able to estimate when the next oil change will be! ;D

speaking about lubricating the SL-1200 series, how do i remove the platter away from the spindle? will i just pull it out slowly or does it have any hidden screws? stereophile, please help... Remove the mat. There are holes in the platter. Insert your fingers and pull away gently. Push down on the spindle with your thumb as you are pulling the platter away. Overtime, the sleeve on the platter and the spindle may bind/freeze. Should this happen, a spot of WD-40 might help. Once the platter is removed, clean the dust from the area under the platter. Clean the spindle and the platter sleeve. Apply a drop or two of the oil of your preference. Replace the platter and give it a spin with your hand. Wipe off the excess oil from the spindle. I guess it won't hurt 'changing oil' every 6 months.

thanks a lot sir. was able to remove the platter without much effort but i still can't figure out where to apply the oil. if i'll put it around the spindle, an oil with less viscosity should be able to sip through between the space but an automotive motor oil would still be thick and viscous enough and would hardly penetrate. is it alright if i use a more fluid oil like that used in Singer sewing machines of the past?

Singer or 3M oil will work. It's just that when I compared the Mobil 1 w/c is 5w, the Mobil 1 is so thin, light and much more slippier than the other two. It's also temperature stable. My car's engine never overheated after I switched over to Mobil 1 vs. non-synthetic oil. I doubt my engine will last a minute if I use Singer or 3M oil as the replacement. I don't buy a liter of the stuff. Just ask for the remaining stuff in the plastic container when a friend changes oil w/ Mobil 1. I put a drop or two on the spindle and its base. I spread it with my fingers. I put another drop or two in the sleeve w/c goes around it. I know,... I know, the Mobil 1 is beyond spec for an ordinary car engine, and even more so for a ttable. But if you can get your hands on a few drops for free.... ;D

Baka pwede rin gamitin mga shock oil for Remote Control models which comes in various viscousity from 5WT (the lightest) up to 100+WT available sa mga RC Hobby Shops. Thanks. losi_phile

I don't own or had a chance to set-up a Technics linear tracker, so I can't anwer your question. I know KD over as WS owns a Technics linear tracker. He might be able to help you.
As to other types of oil, you'll have to try it to see if it works for you...then tell us. ;D
