Just read from the wires today that Japan Victor (JVC) would be introducing new technology hifi speakers that breathe, not vibrate as in traditional speaker cones. I don't know if that's new since in mid '80s while in Japan as a student, Technics also introduced the flat-panel speakers, or honeycomb membranes, that didn't sell in the market.
The interesting part for me of today's news is that JVC was identified as part of the Matsushi-ta Group, which also makes Technics, National, Panasonic, Ramsa, etc. This could be another Japanese hifi gimmick. But then again, who knows?
Here's a copy of the report by Agence France Presse:
Speakers that breathe music
TOKYO: Japan's JVC says it will soon market a first-of-a-kind speaker system that "breathes" sound rather than vibrates.
The "Pulsating Sphere Speaker" is covered with 11 pentagonal membranes that emit sound in all directions, unlike traditional speakers where the sound is projected forward through a single vibrating membrane.
"We plan to begin sales throughout Japan and the world in the first half of 2007," said Akiko Sakakibara, spokeswoman for Victor Company of Japan (JVC), a unit of Matsushi-ta Electric Industrial.
The speaker's 11 membranes move with the sound as it comes from the centre to the exterior, meaning it "breathes" rather than "vibrates" like traditional speakers, the company said Friday.
"It's the first realisation of a technology which acousticians have been dreaming of for 60 years as they find this to be the ideal way to reproduce sound faithfully and naturally," said JVC engineer Jiro Nakaso. Unlike traditional speakers, the pulsating sphere "has no hard surface, which prevents the distortion which comes with it," he said.
Researchers for the company believe the speaker system could be set up in different ways, such as hanging from the ceiling or being placed on rods, as the sound goes in all directions.
