bought this two weeks ago, but brought it home only yesterday since i'm not supposed to buy one until i've paid my kid's school bills. it's a 1975 Luxman L-505V, 55wpc, next to the TOTL L-309V back then. it sounds okay but in my initial impression not as good as my L-80 that i use as reference for amps below 100wpc. the 30wpc L-80 Anniversary is significantly better not only in sound but also in looks and quality of materials, in and out, used.

sa laki ng gastos natin, Sir, dapat mag-enjoy din tayo. just had the JBL 4430 tested and my target is to bring it home mid- june (kung walang kukuha). actually, comparing it with my best speakers, hindi ganun kalayo ang diprensya at tolerable volume. kaya lang, the 4430 is a sought-after hifi heavyweight worldwide. sayang if i have the cash and i'd just let it go to someone who doesn't know its real worth.

have you checked JLLP's? no heavyweights but several collectibles, including a pair of big Sony APM speakers at P2K but with cone surrounds that need replacement. if only those AK vintage hunters were based in Manila, we could sell those rare items as high as $500/pair.

can't stop myself. i just got a Pioneer SA-8800, '70s vintage, for a giveaway price of roughly equivalent to 30 liters of gasoline. it has only one power tansformer unlike SA-8800II which has two. not as clean and as powerful as my monster amps but it has the distinctively robust Pioneer sound i was missing since the late '80s. performs better compared with new-production amps i've heard lately!
joey,

i had a reconnaissance of the usual sources here the other day after learning that Sir Obet is arriving next week and might bring home vintage hifi goodies. in one of the warehouses, i noticed a mint-condition Yamaha DSP-101 with a P1K price tag. had it tested by a friendly technician and decided it's mine. i'm not really an HT guy although i was hot on it back in mid '90s with my first HT set up comprising of a JBL Sound Director surround sound processor and a complete 6-piece set of Wharfedale Modus speakers. well, P1K for Yamaha DSP is a giveaway considering it's in mint condition, built like a tank and had rack-mount front panel. before leaving, i saw a pair of birch-enclosed Aurex speakers, bookshelf size 13X11X23. i asked for the price, was told P2K, and i took it home. the factors that led me to that decision aside from the price are the wooden boxes and the weight -- over 20 kgs for each box. my instinct tells me a small box rated at 50watts load capacity and over 20kgs, should be good quality. i found out later that the woofer coils of both speakers were burnt. how the previous owner did that is a mystery to me. i had the woofers repaired, coils and spiders were replaced at a cost of P400 for the pair. my favorite shop's work quality, i'd say, is even better than Audiophiles'. during my hobby days in Manila, most repairs of my gear, especially non-Japanese, were done by Audiophile in Paco. anyway, after a day, i got the woofers back. i've tested the pair for a couple of hours, compared with other speakers, and concluded it's worth at least five times my acquisition cost. it blows away the Yamaha NS-650, which is currently hooked as speaker A to my Sansui 907F. i had just compared it with the Mordaunt Short 3.40, next to TOTL in early '90s, and this pair of Japanese crap makes the Mordaunt Short sound like entry model! its best qualities are in mid and high frequencies -- so smooth, no trace of nasal or tinny sound even if you tinker with its pots. i always thought 3-way systems, usually with MF and HF adjustments, only degrade overall sound quality but that does not apply here. the Aurex pair does look ugly, reminds me of cheapie "baffles" sold in Raon in the '70s, and does not command a good price in Japan's used market. it certainly would not have much re-sale value here considering Aurex is not famous for hifi. but then again it is a brand of Toshiba, one of Japan's sogo-soshas. all one has to do is to look inside any electronic equipment, hifi or otherwise, and the company's components were likely used. i'm getting too long, better for you to look at the photos:

joey,
pasyal ka rito at marami tayong ma-re recycle na hifi from the junk shops. konting barya lang, at access to Internet hifi directories and we'll have upscale vintage audio likely better than brand new units available from boutique-type hifi shops. P5K lang ang round-trip ticket, itaon mo ng Kadayawan, 2nd week of August para masaya at bumabaha ng prutas!
