I always see people in this hobby particularly nowadays that some if not most people listen to music to appreciate their audio equipment, mostly going from one store to another with their test cd auditioning eqpt. but on the other side I have been with musicians and music lovers and they are happy with a very very simple setup, others with cassette am/fm radio only, no high end amps, no speakers that cost a thousand and more and they are merely contented even with audio cassette.
What keeps me bugging is, are those or we, are not music lovers too? or is it that we are using music as a tool to appreciate audio equipment.
I always hear from people bout the "warmest, the superiority of mid, the extension of the lows and so on and so forth", but seldom I hear, "hey! listen how the pianist fingers stride to the keys of the piano", or "can you hear the feeling that's coming out of his guitar while playing?" maybe i'm a little too much on this, but this is I encountered and I want to share it with you so maybe you can enlighten me and tell me that there is no thin line between love for music and love for audio equipment..... thanks.

when we become so concerned about every little tweak we can do to our equipment and accesories based on the belief that the resulting sound will get better, then i believe we are more in love with our equipment and the bragging rights that usually go with it

for me, i've already traversed that stage where i would sit down and listen critically to my "music equipment" and not to my music. most often than not, our notion of critical listening is that of finding faults on our gears and not how the artists may have sounded or deviated in their new albums as compared to their previous releases. having reached the stage of "saturation" so to speak, where i perceived that my equipment had already fulfilled my needs in so far as their capabilities on sound reproduction are concerned, i am now focusing my attention and resources to a higher level - and that is, enjoying the music. inseparable part of it is collecting your sources of music like vinyls, SACDs, XRCDs, HDCDs and CDs which you will even put in a music catalouge as repository of your music collection. gears may come and go but your collection of softwares will remain with you during your lifetime, if you are indeed a music lover as most of us feigned to be!! ;D

i think of this hobby as similar to wine-tasting..... some hobbyists will smell and gargle the wine, then spit it out.... others would just enjoy the drinking..... and still others will enjoy both tasting & drinking.
actual beer enthisiast review of San Miguel Beer:
"Pours a light yellow with a wispy pretty long lasting head and wimpy lace. The aroma is crisp firm maltiness with some grassy hops in the back. The taste is mildly bready with some light citrusy, grassy, herbal notes. Hop bitterness is evident in the finish, unlike some other adjunct lagers (ie Blue, Canadian). The mouthfeel is light with delicate carbonation."
what's on ur mind when u drown that spicy pulutan w/ the first gulp?
"Ahhhhhh... sarap."

personally this is how i progressed in this hobby: 1. music - when the equipment being played upon do not matter (be it cassette, karaoke, walkman) and the media it has been incoded into (cassette, cd, md) but the singers and bands kinda music, how they sing and play and the wait for the the release of their next album (would it be better that the last); 2. equipment - as the capacity to buy and the accessibility arose so does the desire to create a set-up that will now play the music that you like at its best (madinig man lang yong kanta at a new level), however this has somehow affected the music genre i listen to the most (as metal and hardcore music matters not where it is being played so long as you play it loud, i shifted to music where details, seperation, etc. matters more----- is more apparent, like jazz, voice etc) the media and the technology used to record the same (hdcd, audiophile). research and furtherance of knowledge is now a must, not like before when you simple set down plug, play and listen.... or headbang for me ;D 3. music & equipment- as i rediscovered the beauty that is vinyl things are now 50/50, 50% music and 50% equipment. well i guess we all know what i mean by this, as you cnt really enjoy the music without better equipment (not the BEST and COSTLIEST) nor shall we be able to enjoy it more without the music that we trully like. BTW: before, i hate having duplicate copies of the music i already have be it tape and tape copy, cd and tape copy, etc. now as i acquire one vinyl and love it, the search is on for the best copy you could get your hands upon it.

Must agree with Sir Narayan view were more concern with our gears than music... but been critical with my gears taught me to apprieciate other genre of music like Jazz or vocal music unlike before i just listen to rock, disco and love song.
I notice when not focus on listening that the music is more beautiful and wonderful. ;D
