Universal players don’t get more empowering than this. Bundled into a sleek, space-saving body, the DV-SP502E is the perfect embodiment of Onkyo’s renowned build quality and emphasis on performance - all backed up by quality parts such as a 108 MHz/12-bit video D/A converter and 192 kHz/24-bit audio D/A converters to ensure the quality of your music and video is maintained during the digital-to-analog conversion process. PERSONAL COMMENTS:
Clear and crisp talaga. Fast loading, and quick response to basic disc navigation commands, like fast forward, reverse, slow motion, play, pause and resume. Hindi nawawala yung image on screen when I do fast forwards and rewinds.
I've learned from one site na ito nga daw ang charateristic ng video chip nito (Mediatek all-in-one MPEG decoder/video processing chip), na talagang mabilis mag process. Just a quote from this site: www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=123
"The Mediatek is an extremely fast chip, and this is probably its most favorable attribute. The user is treated to quick navigation, excellent chapter skip speed, and completely seamless layer changes. While these things don’t improve its video performance, they are appreciated in the day-to-day use of the player. Nothing is more frustrating than a player that lags at every command, but the SP-502 won’t do any of that."
Out of the box obvious kagad yung difference ng video quality with Nextbase 787 and Pioneer DV655, which I also own.
Audio quality, at two channel stereo, very good! Detail was good enough. Bass reproduction, well Onyo eh, know sa good bass. There is depth and soundstage as well. Kaso nga lang I noticed something na kakaiba.
I connected it via digital optical cable to my RXV1400 and used it as transport, and utilized the DAC of the reciever. I also connected it via interconnects to my Primare I20, thus utilizing the internal DACs of the DV-SP502. However on both occasions pansin ko mahina sya. What do I mean? Well, kung sa ibang CD players like the Arcam or Nexbase, naka 35 ako sa volume control ng AV receiver, sa Onkyo naka 30 to 25. Mahina talaga tumunog. On both systems the DV-SP502 requires that I crank up the volume a little more than my other players to be able to hear better it's sound reproduction.
I tried SACD at two channels. I used yung Johnny Frigo SACD ko. Detail was okay din, considerably. However, medyo disapointed ako kasi when I played the same CD on my Arcam CD73T mas gusto ko pa yung detail ng Arcam, which was playing the CD at 16bit. Mas malambing and may spacing between instruments talaga sa Arcam. Medyo nagtataka nga ako eh, hmmm. Diba SACD dapat mas well defined ang instruments and mas higher ang resolution?
Sorry I was not able to try it with multi channel SACD. Wala akong multi-channel cable eh.
Video performance is very good. Two channel audio is very good with enough detail, bass, and soundstage. Problem is mahina. SACD performance was okay na rin.
Built and design looks sturdy. Pogi mag design ang Onkyo eh. However, Parang magaang. What do you think?
FYI na rin, according to this web site: www.hometheaterhifi.com/cgi-bin/shootout.cgi?function=search&articles=123, the DV-SP502 is a rebadged Pioneer DV-588a.
Kung kayo ang bibili if you are on a budget and you are looking for a good universal player, pwede na to.
But if you could stretch your budget ng konti, go for DENON DVD-1920, na nasa 23k to 25k. What HIFI awardee.
Yun lang.
