In my listening room, the wall outlets are grounded and the room has a separate breaker in the swithch box, so that the power is clean. It's quiet. I made grounding adapters for the outputs of my AVRs including it's power cord so that all my gear is properly grounded. In this room, I noticed, that if your ICs near the phono box and turntable are not shielded, hum can be picked up. Cable dressing can take care of this issue.
In my living room where I have a simple set-up, the outlets are not grounded. Fortunately, I noticed no humming. I'm using only a Shure cart so that may not be so big a factor. I haven't tried using an MC cart in this room, so I can't say if it will pick up any hum.
