just found this site (i guess most of you already know this): www.enjoythemusic.com/freestuff.htm offering free protractor. this was the same protractor also given free by Off Duty Audio Directory magazine (distributed free to US servicemen in military bases but sold openly to outsiders around the base) back in early '80s. a page, in transparent plastic, on that magazine had the protractor printed and all you have to do is cut the outer half of the page to get a hard plastic protractor free. also another gadget i owned then was a Burwen dynamic filter that cancels record noise. i was trying to look for it but can't find it anymore, probably left it in my wife's house in Las Pinas. Burwen's gadget, removes as much as 60% of clicks and pops from old vinyl. it has 3-position switch that allows comparison when you play your old record. one position with the noise filter on (Burwen's working); second position bypasses the filter (Burwen's not working) and third position - inverse - or you'll hear no music when playing, only the clicks and pops removed. bought it from Manny Lim's Audiolab in Timog at P4K, i think, over one-month salary for me in mid '80s. brand new price was roughly $400.

just noticed analog accessories are sold comparatively high there in Manila. just bought a new Audio Technica record cleaning kit (AT6012) here in Davao (cleaning brush plus 2-fl. oz. cleaning fluid) at only P650. This is currently sold at needledoctor.com at $20 (without tax and shipping charges yet) Also bought an SC-2 Discwasher stylus cleaning solution at P100.
Those are definitely a bargain. The AT613 cleaning fluid is guaranteed to clean your vinyls well and reduce analog noise by up to 50%. I've been using it since early '80s and was sold by Audiophile back then at roughly P300 (2-ounce) without the big brush/applicator. A two-ounce bottle could clean more than a hundred records.
there are other accessories available such as metal isolators/spikes, TT balance, Audio Technica disco felt mat (P500), etc. Superman regularly visits Davao and he knows where to get these analog essentials.

Are there still anti-static gadgets out there for LPs? Like Zero-stat guns, carbon fiber brushes and plymer inner sleeve replacements? Every serious LP collector should have these. Static is the culprit of dirt that cause clicks and pops and crackles and othjer surface noise vagaries.
Also do you de-humidify your listening room? This is an excellent gadget to ensure that dust do not form into grunge that can make them difficult to dislodge with ordinary cleaning in record grooves over time.

me and diego were just talking about this over the phone last night. did you know that humidity - the number one problem in vinyl collecting - seems higher there in Manila than here in Davao?
my experience is that my vinyls would develop minute-sized mold-like dirt if not used for at least 6 months there in Manila - if not stored in an airconditioned room (probably due to heat and rain/frequent change in weather.) here in Davao, my LPs are stored not in an airconditioned room and they still sound okay.
also, diego is looking for a true carbon brush. yes, we still have an old stock Discwasher Zerostat gun here available for sale. to add some more gadgets analog addicts should have are as follows:
1. dieters weighing scale - this helps a lot if you have several turntables and a lot more headshells. having a record of correct weights of the cartridge/headshell combination allows you to assign which assembly should go to which turntable. this would allow you to change headshell/cartridge with hardly any adjustment on VTF or anti-static gauge.
2. a powerful magnifier lens (at least 10X capable) - this would provide you a good assessment of your stylus's condition, if it's already chipped or thoroughly clean or needs replacement. it also provides you a tool if your buying Taiwan-made replacements whose quality are a suspect. a powerful magnifier lens shows if the diamond mounted on the tip is properly aligned or are shaped according to the box description (spherical, elliptical, etc.)
will post photos of these two gadgets i'm using later.

as promised, while waiting for the technician to fix my network problem, here's a photo of the two gadgets mentioned above. the magnifier has two arms that could hold stylus assembly (in the photo, it holds an AT-15 stylus frame). the weighing scale has my heaviest cart/headshell assembly, an AT-155LC, weighing roughly 20 grams.

The carbon fiber brush I had in 84 was quite expensive. If I recall, it cost around 1.5T. It had a wire attached to its metal frame that must be grounded which I did connect to the amplifer's phono grounding.
How much is the zerostat antistatic gun these days?
Also, you can prevent much statis if you replaced all your inner sleeves with anti-static polymer sleeves. Are these still available>

diego,
bagong bili ko ito last weekend, replacing my old ordinary looking magnifying glass (dahil sa dami ng biniling stylus). this has a heavy iron stand and with two alligator clips serving as hands. sa Victoria Plaza Dept. Store, third floor science instruments section, only P200.
av,
Zerostat is available here at P1.5K. i didn't buy one since i already have an anti-static mat for my frequently used TT. however, i've noticed that vinyl static seems not a big problem to me now compared with the '80s, when i would open my LPs and feel the record sleeves clinging to my skin. probably, unlike then when i play as long as 5 hours of vinyl a day, i only play roughly two hours daily now (di ko masyadong napapansin). or, it could also be our weather here in Davao, which is relatively stable.
also the polymer sleeves are available at a friend's shop but expensive at P20 per piece i think. BTW, i think most of the sleeves used in laser discs are anti-static polymers and i'm using such sleeves as substitute.

Here is a record brush I recently found. It has a brush and a sticky round pad to pick up the dust.

sir Diego,
kinuha mo na pala, nakalimutan ko na yan, ah. i was interested when i saw it last year. sabihin mo sa kaibigan natin ibagsak na nya yung presyo ng Audio Research at Electa Amator. yung killer JVC TT niya binibigay sa akin ng P3K, sabi ko hindi ako interesado, thinking he would drop the price further to P2K. but i did give him the VinylEngine address so he'll have a manual for that rare piece of hifi.
