I started this hobby of ours with an HT system. My first dvd player was a Nextbase. It lasted for just a year. So when I had the budget, I upgraded to a Pionner DV-655A, a universal player. Yabang ko pa nun, wala naman ako dvd audio and SACD medium. To date, I only have three samples of these CDs. Linda Ronstadt’s “What’s New” in dvd-audio from Odyssey and gifts from my balikbayan cousins, Mariah Carey’s “# 1s” and “Chicago” the movie soundtracks in SACDs. Using my 5.1 Marantz receiver, I was able to enjoy them but never compared with their standard cd equivalent for I did not have copies of them. I never did understand why these mediums are more expensive. I know we pay for technology but is there a big difference in sound quality? According to some , yes, but I never got the chance to verify.
Recently though, I got a copy of Linda Ronstadt std cd and it was experimenting time again.
Using my tube system as amplifiers and the Pioneer universal player as source, I started listening to the standard cd for about an hour or so. Repeating tracks I like most to remember their signature sound.
Adjusting the player’s output to two channels, I then played the DVD-audio cd of Linda and at once, I could hear the difference. Soundstage gets wider, vocals sound richer (mas buo) and the layering more clearer. Is it worth the additional bucks? Have you tried it? My two cents..
