i just polished these canisters on my vintage eico st70. i don't have an idea what are they for except they are used to hold down the tubes (they are spring loaded) to their proper position. then i read from the other forum that these are for "microphonics" (what are these?) and some form of heat sink (why? they are suppose to be ventilated, right or not?). i tried to research but i got more confused. what are they really for? why don't i see them on some "modern" tube gears? your views please, my masters

Yup, its used against microphinocs. Pre-amp tubes, particularly on phono sections are prone to microphonics. With these steel covers, the tubes are supposed to be "shielded", so as not to attract noise which can be amplified, and heard from your speakers.
