Dong, Different trends of thought diyan, some prefer SUTs (passive), while others prefer using active amplification (either Tube or SS), to bring the signal voltage up. At present, I'm using active amplification (Cambridge Azur 640P) for my MC Cart, but I adjusted the resistor load to about 65 ohms. If you want to experiment, Lundahl 9206 SUTs are available at Silver Strings Around 7K lang ata yung pair. Rod (Audiophileman2002) can assist you on how to assemble it. Cheers.

Try both active MC & Step-up via MM input. Listen to find out w/c works best for you in your system. Of late I've been leaning towards a SUT. There's a thread on MC step-ups in VE. Look in pre-amp forum.

Look in pre-amp forum. Ganyan nga balak ko gawin doc. Lagyan ko ng MC yung Garrard at Luxman. Yung nakakabit sa MM, gamitan ko ng SUT, tapos yung isa, diretso sa MC Input. Pindut lang sa likod the X-LPS to choose between the 2 tables. Isip ko lang kung ano ang idadaan ko sa SUT, yung Denon o yung Ortofon...

The choice of which cart to use a step-up for will depend on which step-up you can get. Check the VE site. You have to determine which step-ups match with your carts and see what is available. The other will be plugged into the MC input.

Isa pang palaisipan Doc, saan ko kaya ikakabit ang Denon, sa Garrard o sa Luxman.. Ibahin ko ng konti, sa SME 3009 or sa AT-1010 tonearm? Pasensiya na doc ha, daming tanong.

Dong,
To add to Doc Stereophile's response, in addition to the correct Step up ratio, kelangan mo ring i-consider yung tamang impedance load nung cartridge to maximize it's potential.

Jon- you are correct on the above. Before you try, do the homework. Match your carts natural impedance to your phono mc SUT Dong- Try both carts on both ttables and listen to what sounds best. At least you can easily swap because of remoevable headshells...

Not to promote more confusion, but another alternative is to get a "Pre Pre-Amp" (yes, dalawang "PRE"). As the name suggests, a Pre Pre-Amp is connected between the turntable and an MM phono stage. In addition, unlike a step-up tranny which is passive, a Pre Pre-Amp is active.
Again, you have to try it for system matching purposes.

Is this advisable even for high gain MC cartridges?

Uy, ibang diskarte ito ah MSM. Is this advisable even for high gain MC cartridges? For hi-gain MCs, di na kailangan nito. Its just used for low to medium gain MCs. Its really an alternative to a step-up tranny. Its just active. I was able to try one before made by Mark Levinson. At the end of the day, I still prefered a Fidelity Research step-up tranny which cost 1/10 of the ML.

Both the SME3009 and AT-1010 are light tonearms therefore favoring high compliance carts. The DL103 on the other hand is a low compliance cart. Not a good match there.

Zetroce- Bro, any update if you got an SUT or went active MC?

After trying this out myself, seems that I'm also headed towards getting a Step Up than using an head amp for the MC. I did variable loading for the MC, but there's that "sweetness" in the sound that the step up has , which I don't hear on the head amp

Zetroce- Bro, any update if you got an SUT or went active MC? My apologies for the late reply.. Still running on direct MC from my XLPS. I have no time yet to set up my transformers. I got a pair from Rene but have not placed in a box yet. Hindi nga ako masyadong nag-audio lately.
