Is it normal to hear static from speakers, with turntable off and amplifier on, when I clean the stylus with the brush ? tks Yes. That is normal. When the turntable is off, no current goes to the motor. Brushing the stylus results in the vibrations w/c are then transmitted thru the lead wires. These signals are first amplified by your phonostage w/c is subsequently amplified by your amp.

Yup. Actually, electric current is needed by the turntable only to run the motor. The arm and cartridge don't need electricity to do its job. Even if you unplug your turntable, but with the pre-amp / power amp / integrated amp / receiver ON, with volume up, you will hear that rubbing noise when clean your stylus. When I said that the motor is the only thing that requires electricity, this applies to basic, and hi-end turntables. On turntables with a lot of automatic stuff / gadgets, electricity will also be needed to run other parts. It is advisable to put your system on mute, or lower your volume when cleaning your stylus just to be on the safe side.

Is it normal to hear static from speakers, with turntable off and amplifier on, when I clean the stylus with the brush ? tks that's normal, but there are some TTs where amplification of signals from the cartridge shuts off when the cartridge is disengaged from tracking position. thus, you can clean the TT stylus even when your amp volume is way up. examples are Technics's linear trackers such as SL-15, SL-10 and SL-7. i'm not sure if this is true to lower models starting at SL-6. got Pioneer and Akai linear trackers with active signals even when the cover is up just like the traditional TTs.
