i agree with all those comments. for me, it started when i was growing up here in the province and my Dad was into tube hifi then shifting to SS, mostly Sonys. when i got a job in early '80s, my first big investment was not a car, but a P10K system consisting of amp, tuner, TT, tape deck and a DIY speaker on a design picked up from Radio Electronics magazine (Wave system).
i thought the hifi itch was gone when my PC connected to the Internet in mid '90s even as i indulged in a JBL-anchored HT system. until i got an online overseas job that requires me to report to our HK office two weeks every three months. that's when i started to buy audio gears again, Epos, Musical Fidelity, Wharf, etc.
then, came the discovery of surplus Jap hifi here in Davao, plus constant visits (without registering) at PinoyDVD. in the last two years, i bought surplus gears that i could only dream of 20 years ago, such as Sansui Alpha 907 and Sansui AU-X11 Vintage Master Amp, which were SS state-of-the-art during their prime.
would i still upgrade on amps? yes, if i see a high-powered Krell, Stasis, or Ampzilla again sold reasonably in the US (that's if I get lucky in May), or surplus limited edition models of Sansui Alpha series. what's nice with the the Davao hifi surplus market is that it's full of suprises, just like a box of chocolate, to paraphrase Forrest Gump. you'll never know what you'll get next.

started when i attended an audio show in early 90's.
stopped for a while until HT/DD came out and i upgraded to multichannel.... "itch" was confined to banana plugs.
stopped for a while until i met the kwela boys..... major SARS, the itch has spread to amps, tubes, etc.
stopped for a while since i'm now more into music, LP's in particular........ LP itch, currently suppressed only by lack of funds. ;D ;D ;D ;D

LP itch, currently suppressed only by lack of funds. ;D ;D ;D ;D in my case, it started first with speakers, then came the amps, then cd players and for a while i focused my attention to digital music by splurging on cds to play with. after acquiring a decent turntable, i'm now bent on getting LPs of the music that i heard in my high school and college days - the music that i grew up with. now, my passion for music is no longer dependent on what type of gears i own coz i'm now basically hooked on discovering the mystery of the crackles - the ticks and pops, which i find more soothing especially at nights when you can hear them at their finest!! ;D ;D

nice thread. it reveals more of what type of audio enthusiasts we are. i'm biased on amps (still SS), speakers next, then digital sources. so, upgrades would be on those gears.
analog is last, but i've accumulated a lot of choice vinyls since the early '80s, many from the young Villars of Mareco (especially my long lost friend Jeff) when they decided to close their record shops in mid '80s. also got a lot of vinyls from overseas trips. my audio investment sharing, however, is 50-50 on hardware and software.
my dream is to store my record and CD collection, including most of my audio gears, at UP Mindanao, within probably 20 years, where i hope to donate a music (museum) room hoping the coming generation would have time to check vintage audio equipment and software. even after i made that donation, i'll still get myself upgrades. sana tumama ako sa lotto!

Upgrade itch, at first it was pointless for me to resist until I finally rediscovered the magical world of analog. For me, gone were the days of upgrading caps and resistors, wires and ics' cd players and equipment tweaks. After getting my feet wet in analog. It made me realize that no matter how much you'd spend for digital and equipment tweaks you still wouldn't get that life like sound you're longing for. There's really something mystical about the format which made me stick to it. Brings more life into the music. For now, amps, preamps, wires, cables, etc. sound all the same to me.

Cure?? I doubt na meron?? some stop going to audio shop, some stop attending session, some busy them self other thing like ps2 etc... do help a lot. ;D but for me getting to know few secrets of the game help a lot in delaying the itch and realizing when stop for a while. ;D unlike newbie belief like expensive and branded gears are the best option. ;D ;D

Before... I enjoyed listening to music with a prologic receiver and a vcd player ;D ;D
Now... when I started to join listening sessions.... my audio life became miserable ;D but after you guys discover the mystery of analog... I think SARS infection will stop for a while ;D

I begun all this with my tape collections (which i dont have the smallest of a clue where they are all now), in my college days. it was all focused on versitality as i travel a lot then so thus now, having music where-ever i maybe and i may go, so my first investment was logically a walkman.... then the cd player, until i meet mp3s. i thought i have found my nirvana when i got my very first portable mp3 player, that, until i decided to invest on a decent HT set-up (i used to have a portable sony vcd player connected to a powered PC speakers 2.1) and got to know the kwela boys (salamat syo master kim ;D ). From that moment onwards everything now matters (which before never even crossed my mind as important) ic's, cables, tweaks, at marami pang iba. my itch focused mostly with speakers and then tubes (sadly i still do not have a tube amp), as i was preparing myself for the ultimate itch (tube amp, so i thought) i discovered the beauty that was called "ANALOG". Now i think i no longer have the itch to upgrade my current set-up (pinalitan ng itch for the LP's), except those designed for the analog path, in fact i have not listened to any cd for almost 2 weeks now (when before my day isnt complete with out it). addendum: before i buy cds i know not the artist hoping that it might be the artist (song) i was looking for, now i have realized those songs (artist) that i was so longing to have are abundant and a plenty sa LP's........ yong mga hinahanap ko pala e nasa LP's lang! ;D at bakit nga ba mas maganda tunog ng LP?

at bakit nga ba mas maganda tunog ng LP? not really... let's just put it this way you can get a respectably good sound from an analog system at a more economical cost which is comparable to the same level of sonic superiority provided by a digital-based audio system costing a lot more! a very good condition imported LP (costing a little over P500) played on a Technics SL-1200 mk2 equipped with a good cart (costing a little over P12,000) will sound a lot better than an XRCD or SACD (costing a little over P1,500) played on a CD Player or SACD Player (costing a little over P30,000). aside from that, used or pre-owned vinyl records are a lot cheaper than CDs. huwag ka lang bibili ng mga reissues at mas mahal pa sa XRCDs o SACDs yon!! ;D ;D

Cure? madali lang yan: 1. Buy the most expensive equipment you want (TT, Amp, CDP, etc) 2. When you get home install it in your system 3. Play and enjoy 4. When your wife gets home - show it to her 5. Show her the receipt (boldly highlight the price paid) [glow=red,2,300]tingnan natin kung maka ulit ka pa[/glow] ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
