i'm also modifying the innards of my Tono but postponed it for a while since i just got it from the dustbin (was unused for about 3 months) and made some modifications for a biamp configuration.
it now feeds two power amps - 100wpc Yamaha B3 and 170wpc Yamaha M4 - driving a modified KEF 101. the B3 for the high frequency and and M4 for mid and low. the result is significant improvement for a hybrid set up which is more flexible compared with pure SS or pure tube. (still my Luxman 5C50 is a better preamp and the Sansui/Accuphase integrateds still are of higher fidelity.)
in my hybrid setup, all one has to do is to turn down the volume of the power amps and allow Tono's tubes to take over thru the pot to get the valve sound. conversely, turning up the volume of the power amp, and less volume adjustment for Tono, allows SS-biased sound to come out of the KEF.

sorry you lost me here - you have the Tono driving 2 power amps... how do you turn down the volume of the power amps to let the Tono's tubes take over?

the tono and power amps have their own volume controls (now i understand, there are power amps without volume controls, my amps have both left and right output adjustments at the back of the units). this is the Yamaha M4: web.telia.com/~u85611645/page10.html the Yamaha B3 looks similar to this: page.freett.com/knisi/bx-1.html (sorry, i'm too lazy to find a website host for my photo files, tsaka 4-year old 2.1mp lang ang digital cam ko!) btw, i got two pairs of outputs from Tono (the original configuration has only a pair of outputs) feeding the two power amps. that makes adjustments in treble and bass levels possible.

One of my first upgrades with my Tono Pre-amp is replacing stock tubes with better one, i've tried Amperex & Tele but it seems RCA cleartop is my choice for its versatility. Second I replace 3 power capacitors with "Panasonic" (I've tried other brand but [M] is the best) brand, more crystal clear sound & bass authority. Third is replacing resistors with Riken & Dale brand especially the output resistors, again improvements on mids, more laidback sounding. My next upgrade is changing "fast recovery diodes" to Ultrafast recovery diodes hoping there is an improvement. Sun audio Pre-amp still my reference! I've heard pwede i-convert ng Sun-Audio circuits ang Tono? Anybody care to share your diagram?

Cheers!

got my 4th separate preamp - a surplus champagne-colored piano-finish Denon PRA-2000Z, which appears a winner in looks and in original price (200,000 yen) - bought at P2.5K. i still have to hook it though. denon.jp/museum/prapoaseries.html

sweet-sounding sir, but biased on phono inputs (3 with 2 switchable to MCs). i understand its early version had tubes but the Denon engineers decided to make the first PRA-2000 full solid state. don't know why.
btw, have you checked on the Sansui tube website? daming amp schematics doon na magandang paglaruan by someone like you.

I once diy'd a pioneer amp clone but used the "modern" versions of the transistors in TO-92 plastic packages and it sounded awful. ;D but when I replaced it with the original spec'd TO-39 devices, it sounded so good that someone bought it. ;D Most early discrete devices trully sounded very musical. anyway, haven't been to the sansui website, do you have the link? thanks!

had cleaned one of my audio shelves and realized i have yet to take pictures of my Denon PRA-2000, a top of the line pre-amplifier back in early '80s and valued at roughly 200,000 yen when new. PRA-2000's current Yahoo Japan auction price still ranges from 40,000 to 70,000 yen, more expensive than many upscale high-power integrated amps. it's currently paired with Yamaha B3, a rare VFET power amp to maximize its tube-like sonic characteristics. here are a few photos:
