Wow, one of my dream vintage amps! I nearly got its slightly more powerful brother, also newer, MA-6400 (released in the '90s), when a Jap ship captain brought one here early this year quoting P24K. The local traders found the price high, its faceplate looking "weird", and didn't know anything about it, so they passed. When I was informed about the availability of the unit, the ship captain was on his way back to Japan with his unsold hifi gem. The 6200 was priced at roughly $2,000 during its prime in late ;70s and still selling now at $1,000 used in the US market. The 6400 originally at $3,500 in 1997 and currently quoted at $1,500.
I have ordered from Davao traders any vintage (pre-80s) McIntosh amp priced P30K, or below - using the ship captain's quote as indicative figure, and still waiting. Anyway, McIntosh was the brand that Sansui owners looked up to quality wise. (McIntosh was eventually taken over by Jap investors behind the Clarion brand). Vintage Sansui's faceplates were patterned after McIntosh's lay-out design. Sansui engineers eventually found a way to have the brand's own identity and develop a huge following among hifi enthusiasts in the US. Some American audiophiles still call Sansui the "Japanese McIntosh."
Here are some of my amps, still working well and in my possession, aged 30 years or older:
1. Sansui AU-70 (1967) 2. Luxman L-80 (1975) 3. Luxman L-505V (1976) 4. Luxman 5C50 (1976) 5. Kenwood KR-7400 (1976) 6. Denon POA-1001 (1976)
