This pressing is from 1965 available in both mono (4195) and stereo (84195) one source on Blue Notes suggests that the quality of recordings started downhill shortly after 1965. This implies that first issues are the ones to search for. In general, I've found the Blue Note reissue series from the late 70s-early 80s to sound fine, especially for the money they're worth ($5 or so each). Classic BN titles that'd cost big bucks if you could find the originals. Downside is the covers are not the original art, but some nice pictures, obviously not what you'd expect.

The live sessions are quite variable in sonics, although some of the performances by the likes of Dexter Gordon and Bud Powell can be terrific.
Verve, Blue Note and Pablo labels almost guarantee good music and sound. The Blue notes are expensive on the used market, though. The later Blue Note DMM's are not the same thing at all. Several I have purchased are less than stellar sound and performance. Maybe worth a flier if in the budget rack.
64. Any of the Fantasy OJC reissues of material from Prestige or Riverside. Particularly, Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Art Blakey, Bill Evans, Chet Baker.
Jazz West Coast compilations vol. 1-3 / Pacific Jazz or World Pacific labels. Good overview of the Pacific Jazz label from the mid 50's. More common than the individual albums they were taken from and these compilations tend to be cheap.
65. “Blue Note Gems of Jazz” There were 2 compilations put out in the mid 60's to commemorate their 25th anniversary. GREAT music, cheap prices because it is a compilation.
66. Most of the "Gatefold" cover Impulse releases from the early 60's when Impulse was a serious Jazz label.
67. Maxell “Jazz sampler - Vol. 1”
68. “Smithsonian Collection of Classic Jazz.” This 6-LP set pressed by Columbia records contains works from most major artists from Scott Joplin to Ornette Coleman, including alternate takes from Bird, and Monk's blues improvisation from "Bag's Groove" by the Miles Davis All Stars. While the recording quality on some of the cuts is not “audiophile” quality, it would be a grave injustice not to name this very important piece of educational material.
69. Earlier Riverside and Prestige pressings are also quite good. Wes Montgomery has some good stuff.

I'm reading through the "DIVINITY" section though and you can really feel the passion of the writer with regards LP recordings.

This LP originally came out as the Harmonia Mundi. It has also been on the TAS list for a number of years. The original pressing is definitely good enough to make this list on its own, but the ATR reissue* is even better.

It excels in every sonic parameter. It is very transparent, immediate, clean, natural and dynamic. The sound stage is large and the sound-floor is extremely low, allowing every last detail to be heard; including the harmonic structure and decay, tonal and dynamic complexity etc. This LP was a top contender for the designation of the finest "ancient music" LP."

The music actually predates Gregorian chants. It is also a series of chants, but this time with cantors (soloists) and an "ison" (a basso-profundo harmonic foundation). This was the first music ever known to be censored, because of the respective Jewish and Orthodox influences. The Gregorian chants were the pure, and relatively boring, replacements.

I feel this music is fascinating and almost hypnotic in its primal intensity. The basso-profundo, Antoine Sicot, has the most powerful lower notes I've ever heard, and his breath control is simply amazing; it almost sounds like he is "a human organ"! Unfortunately, the sound while very good, has just too much distortion to make this list; the powerful voices ended up overloading the microphones.

I'll have to add the site to my favourites and read in my sparetime.

I have the original Harmonia Mundi LP of La Folia, and it is one demanding LP to listen too... and It's not a typical cantata. You'll get either bored or sleepy halfway through the record play. But, as Arturo Salvatore stated, his list is based more on "sonics" than in performance. Thus, while a recording mat be sonically appealing, there is a chance that the performance itself may be boring.

Listening to the choices of either HP's TAS List, MF and JA's Records to Die for of Stereophile, and AS Supreme Recordings one will understand the musical preferences of each reviewer. And while there are all in disagreement as to which recording (or even label) is the best, they do sometimes commonly recommend a recording that they all consider above par with the rest.

Hmmm, the recommended recordings thread has not yet been updated.... better inform RONY to post his latest finds.

I have the original Harmonia Mundi LP of La Folia, and it is one demanding LP to listen too... and It's not a typical cantata. You'll get either bored or sleepy halfway through the record play. But, as Arturo Salvatore stated, his list is based more on "sonics" than in performance. Thus, while a recording mat be sonically appealing, there is a chance that the performance itself may be boring.

Listening to the choices of either HP's TAS List, MF and JA's Records to Die for of Stereophile, and AS Supreme Recordings one will understand the musical preferences of each reviewer. And while there are all in disagreement as to which recording (or even label) is the best, they do sometimes commonly recommend a recording that they all consider above par with the rest.

Hmmm, the recommended recordings thread has not yet been updated.... better inform RONY to post his latest finds.

My Hat's off to you sir Jagner... like Msmaker you really know not only LPs but music as well.

This analog-vinyl aspect of the audio hobby is really, deep and intricate. I am astonished as to how complicated it is. I guess I have to take it in small bites. It is quite overwhelming for a newbie. Hah!!! You guys could probably write books with the knowledge you have of the topic. The info about tables, arms, needels can probably fill a library.

And to think that just a few years ago, beautiful recording to me just meant Pink Floyd's The Wall and Jethro Tull's Aqualung.

In my younger days, Analog was a Science Fiction magazine I doted on.

And you're right, I've bought me some LPs of Classical Music and I tend to nod after 2 or 3 LPs.. ;D But I am wading in there and trying to get the music.... get the "groove" as you would say.

We all have only a handful of those LPs listed, and would not be able to collect all those listed LPs in our lifetime (Unless bilhin mo yung collection ni Arturo Salvatore and Harry Pearson, hehehe). Besides, I doubt if one will even like the music these listed LPs contain

At the end of the day, each of us will come up with our own list, independent of what others may recommend

Thank you but just like you, I'm also a newbie in analog and I'm also learning (and still learning) from the likes of MSM, Stereophile, master pupil Rony, Pican and Jadis (of Wiredstate). Whatever I learn, I'll try to pass it on to others as well

Yeah, I don't plan to get all of those. IMHO, some are really weird. ;D I just bought some of the ones which are good (subjective again) sonically just to have some sort of reference when ever I change anything in my analog front-end such as cart-rolling. ;D ;D

For me New Wave pa rin. Maski pangit iba tumunog, maganda (for me) naman yung music.

But I have to say, some of those weird music that I purchased (puro reissue, as I don't intend to buy the expensive originals) do sound really great. You will really appreciate what you spent in your hi-end system.

I've got some on the list. But my guiding principle in buying an LP is that I WANT to listen to it. I'm not a record collector hoping that the value will increase someday. Some of the LPs on the list are indeed weird. Some others I don't like.
