Haha, I wonder how deep a scratch your CAT can do to your records.... ;D ;D BTW Lordfoo, where in QC are you staying? There are alot of audiophools in the vicinity? I didn't see this post. Hi zetroce... I am quite near Crame, EDSA santolan intersection. Its okay with the cat scratch... I don't have the kind of records the LP magnates here have. No major investment in LPs for me. Just the discards from the piles you guys have ransacked and rejected. Lord Foo, No wonder you know all the thrift shops in the Murphy area

Hi audio junkie,
Were you able to ask how much those things were being sold for?

For refurbishing. Rescued by a friend from disposal in a trashbin: ELAC Miracord 50H Look at the box the cat dragged in: ... Garrard Zero 100 S! I wonder why they can't spell NET properly...

Had to check if my 301 was working. Borrowed a spare plinth w/ a tonearm/cart from the Master joe3rp. It works flawlessly: Grease Bearing Garrard 301. Beautiful plinth of the MASTER! Custom armboard made by joe3rp for his FR64 tonearm! Strobe platter of 301 Denon DL103R FR64 Tonearm w/ Denon DL103R It will be a very sad day when I have to return this beautiful plinth & tonearm to the Master...

but it will also be a Happy day because that means the plinth you had made will also arrive ;D Vince- Thanks for your thoughts. I'm still thinking of how I want MY plinth to be: single arm or double arm, Loricraft style or mass plinth like joey's. The problem is the tonearm. I, of course, won't have that rare FR64 tonearm...

I think I asked you before about how vintage tables compare to modern ones, whats your take on the "sound" of the two types - in your own setup?

I think I asked you before about how vintage tables compare to modern ones, whats your take on the "sound" of the two types - in your own setup? Good question. It would seem(I've only logged on about 2-3hrs on it) that it is more forgiving with a bit more warmth(coloration?) & musicality. Of course it is not fair to compare the 103R to a Lyra Skala. The Skala mounted on an SME V will extract far more detail from the grooves than the FR64/103R. Some say that the musicality of a Garrard 301/401 is due to the idler drive system. It is that which probably imparts that 'musical coloration' if I am allowed to coin that phrase. I must say I am impressed that a 50+ y/o ttable will last and perform this well after years of storage. Properly set-up(plinth /tonearm/cart) a vintage ttable like my 301 will give modern ttables a run for their cost. The reason why a Garrad 301 or a Thorens 124 is having a revival, is that they are using heavier mass plinths nowadays when coupling these drop-in ttables. It is these plinths which give them their awesome sonics. Currently, VPI will come out with a rim drive adapter kit for their ttables. Though not a true idler(The idler wheel goes between the motor pulley and inside of the platter), Harry Weisfeld thinks it will lend that 'musicality' that idlers have to his ttables. What I have to try is using the SME V/Skala on the 301. That is the only way I can find out how it will perform on equal footing to my Orbe.

I was happy, but still wanted more in supporting my granite plinth 301. Was using 3pcs ceramic teacups to support the granite. Here's the pic: Then I thought if it was possible to incorporate the functions/values I wanted: 1. Support the granite plinth 301 2. Vibration damping 3. Eliminate the stand I didn't have to look far. My source of inspiration was my SL-1200: I ended up having this custom-made for me: It's a solid rubber stand measuring 19in W x 19in L x 22in H. There's just a cut-out to slip in the innards of a 301. This stand/rack/isolator/bottom-plinth weighs in at 42kgs :!: How does it sound? Before listening, I started hopping around it. No stylus jumping out of the grooves. In my wooden floored attic, just walking near the ttable would cause the stylus to jump. Not so anymore :!: Playing the same recordings I did a few nights ago, I noticed that the sonics became crisper, airier and focused. Bass was also tighter and I was so much happier :!: Nice thing too, was that the wifey approved of it's looks. Another bonus, is that it's far easier now cueing up a record.

Here is the world's first SOLID RUBBER PLINTHED 301 :!: + SME 312 tonearm + Koetsu Rosewood Platinum = Super Musical 301 :!: 8) I was invited over to a friend's house and asked to set the cart/tonearm on this super rig! You've gotta hear what this baby can dish out. Simply unbelievable sonics. The big bass you associate with a Garrard, yet with midrange delicacy and dynamics of a modern ttable. Best of both worlds. I kid you not, this is one shocking performer.
