sir, how about MOS-FETs? I have a Marantz PM-84D MOS-FET... How does it compare with VFETs? thanks. Your PM-84D is a good amp model, next to the PM-94 and part of the Quarter A series. mahirap maghanap niyan sa surplus and could be quoted as high as P8K to P10K - upscale price range - by traders here in Davao. I've seen PM84's sa Pier. And they do sell at that price range. The quotes are always higher even than Sansui AUD907's. Two weeks ago I saw and had the Littly Chatty's Store assitant open up a Trio 9900 (kenwood). It says 400 watts power consumption at the back. Two power supplies. The unit was unbelievably heavy. Asking price was 6.5 thou so I hesitated to get the unit. Back home I did some net search. www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/ka-9900.htmIt was gone when i got back. There was a nice looking Quarter A PM84 denon though. I also saw a Luxman LV102 and a Sansui AUD907FExtra. I wish i had the cash to get these nice amps. regards, Foo.

reasonable pricing for a powerful amp. the lay-out reminds me of Accuphase, which was put up in the '70s by a group of brilliant Kenwood engineers. until now, i think Kenwood is still a minority stockholder of Accuphase.

let’s bump this subject. sa kabila buhay na buhay yung topic, dito naman. to jump start, let’s talk about Marantz. the brand which introduced me to the sound of hi-fidelity. my first ever surplus amp was a Marantz PM54D, all 60wpc of it. it was the unit that made me realized that there was more to it than PMPO. then came the Marantz 4270 quad receiver, 70wpc x2, 25wpc x4 and 50 pounds of pure classic Marantz engineering. i honestly think the sound produce by this unit is more than that of its published rating. medyo nag suspetsya na ako na di patakbuhin ang mga vintage at surplus kung nasa tamang kundisyon. and when i had the opportunity to start my home theater system, i got a Marantz SR4300. it was a good amp for multi channel setup but no where near the stereo performance of the 4270. the SR4300 is now history but the 4270 is still with me. which brings me to a new member. the Marantz PM 84. second in line to the legendary PM 94 of the Quarter A series. my curiosity got piqued when i was browsing the Marantz used prices in Orion listing. even though its current price in yahoo japan is about 15,500 yen, it’s still selling at $400 plus in the US while units here in good condition could be had for just a little over ¼ of that. it had an original srp of $1,700 and Y125,000 so maybe it has something to brag about. i was just wondering how it would drive my CS3.5s which according to the owner’s manual would require a minimum 50wpc amp. so when a unit was offered to me, sabi ko trial muna kung pwede. i’m not sure if it could drive the 3.5s. but to my surprise it did, in flying colors. classic marantz stereo. i’m not sure how much wpc i’m using but i seldom pass the 9 o’clock setting. napapakanta na yung mga 3.5s ng malinis at malakas.. its rated at 30wpc classA first quarter to 105wpc classAB for international model like this sample but japan units are rated at 120wpc according to some jap websites. if the 30wpc classA is what i’m hearing then i’m impressed. may ipagmamalaki nga talaga. safe to say I would always be a Marantz enthusiast. some pictures. [URL=http://img19.imageshack.us/my.php?ima as always, it’s a pleasure sharing. thank you for browsing by..

Predictable na itong remarks ko but just to make this thread a bit more active, congrats again Ben. To a certain extent, yan ang hirap ng may direct access ka sa Orion at Yahoo Japan records, pag nakitang magandang klase at mataas ang re-sale value talagang ang sarap habulin, lalo na pag nalaman mo na ang asking price is just a fraction of current used prices in US and Japan.
Besides, in looks and in sound wala kang talo dyan sa PM-84.

You can't stop it. I found out years ago that listening to a newly acquired hifi occupies higher priority than having sex!

You can't stop it. I found out years ago that listening to a newly acquired hifi occupies higher priority than having sex! ;D ;D Patay! Kaya nga ba kahirap pataasin ng WAF ng hobby na ito eh! Ilang beses ko na ba nadinig ang salitaing 'to: "Di ka pa ba matutulog hon?" And the most common answer? "Sandali na lang luv...gusto ko lang madininig ang ________" (fill in the blanks na lang kayo) ;D ;D Sir Southpeak, you've got two jewels there! Congrats! Saan ba makikita ang specs and more info about your Marantz and it's relatives na Quarter series? I remember a long time ago matunog talaga ang Marantz name in audio. But I gues that would be during the reign of Saul Marantz sometime in the late 60's?? The only experience I've had with Marantz was with an AV receiver (SR-72??) with Dolby Pro-Logic that I acquired sometime in the mid 90's. Marketed by Philips so this wasn't the "real thing". It was ok but I think my old ADC stereo amp sounded better.

sirs,
How would you compare the Marantz and the Sansui... would the Marantz 84 be at par with the AUD707? and the Marantz 94 with the Aud 907s?
I own Sansuis but have no experience with Marantz.

I'm a Sansui guy but I would rank the new Marantz as in the same class as Yamaha, which is among the best Japanese brands in terms of quality and looks. The PM-84 compared with Sansui could be in the same class as the D-907s, and the PM-94 in the alpha907 and AU-X category. (I hope the used pricing in Yahoo Japan would agree with me). I'm sure there would be others who would rank Marantz Japan's top amps higher than Sansui's upscale's models.

Sir sandawa,
I've observed that the Pier Surplus pricing bears out your assessment. The Marantz PM 84's and 94's are often priced higher than the AUD 707 and 907. The TOTL Sansui AUD 907s are priced only as high as the Marantz PM84 with the rare 94s priced higher thatn 907s. The sansui alphas are quite rare that I haven't seen them much at the pier.

sir mandrake, i guess we are all on the same boat. "pa, sleep na tayo.. sandali lang ma, tapusin ko lang yung cd.." ooops, wrong answer ;D for the QuarterA series, this is the most interesting site i can find, but no comprehensive specs on the PM84, just 105wpc.. www.quarter-a.netfirms.com/pm-84.htmbaka meron tayong mga kasama na may complete specs.. for the Lo-d HMA 9500.. its the MkII, almost the same specs? page.freett.com/knisi/hma-9500mk2.htmli own both sansui (au-111, ba-2000) and marantz (4270, PM-84, owned PM-54, SR4300) but please don't make me choose i only have good things to say for both

Sunday at the pier... I bought a MOSFET LOD and a hugh Onkyo speaker...but that's for later when I have pics. What i want to post are two nice looking surplus amps i saw that some of you may be interested in. I noticed a Sansui AU Alpha 707 with a power consumption of 300+. (enough said about aht alpha sansuis in various posts here). I've seen 607s once in a while but yesterday was the first time i've seen a 707. Its a pity i have not budget for more amps. Also saw a Pioneer A717 reference amp was also at the store. One knob was missing though with the shaft broken. a PIONEER INT, A-717 HI PERFORMANCE NON-SWITCHING Description: 8-AUD INPUTS, PHONO EQ AMP, HYBRID MOVING COIL TRANSFORMER Manufacture Years: 1987 - 1989 Additional Information: Power: 100wpc Retail MSRP: $700.00 www.niji.or.jp/home/k-nisi/a-717.htmBoth amps had an asking price of 6500 which could probably be haggled down some more.

I got a big kick last night playing the Integra P306 (1979) -- thanks sir Obet -- and Yamaha B-3 (1979) VFET for 4 hours. I'm finally getting the sound I want from the rare B-3, which to me was previously thin, the way it was designed to sound like valve, as the VFET experts would tell me. Now, the music comes out clean but muscular, pretty impressive to my ears, and is now in the same league on my list as the alpha 907s, au-x and the Accuphase. The P-306 and B-3 blend nicely with the vintage Denon SC-104 (1977), which puts out deep, clean bass.

May natutuhan na naman ako ;D. I thought the only valuable Marantz amps were those made during the days of Saul Marantz. Now I know better, thanks to you guys. Southpeak, from the link you gave me it seems Marantz are well on their way to re-establishing themselves as quality hifi equipment manufacturers .

“PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE, HOPE” virtues “bakaleneos” must have. Yesterday when whole of metro manila was preparing itself for an afternoon siesta, the owner of this magnificent machine decided to post it for sale with an incredulous asking price AND a pioneer tuner as freeby. I was also preparing to rest with my children but then decided to go on line for just a quick look on my favorite hunting sites. I was not expecting too much because I’m aware that the friendly competition out there in finding such gems has already become an ordeal, almost near impossible. But alas, maybe I did something nice that day and the audio gods decided to give me some luck. I was eight in the viewers count, no time to loose. i pounced on it just like a lion on the prowl for game. And the rest is history.. fantastic!!!! KENWOOD KA-9100 www.thevintageknob.org/KENWOOD/KA9100/KA9100.html“PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE, HOPE” kung may tyaga, may nilaga ;D happy hunting ;D
